COLUMBIA, S.C. — The winner of the $1.3 billion race to create the nation’s first private university in Alabama is the state’s oldest, the oldest state university in the United States and the first university in Mississippi to open since the Civil War.
But the race to become the nation “first public university” has attracted a fierce competition for a host of other high-profile colleges and universities across the South.
The race to succeed Elon Musk at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was the largest since the merger of Southern Methodist University and North Carolina Central University in 1973.
Its winner is Clemson University.
Elon Musk is expected to win the race for the nation ‘first public’ university in 2019, but it could be a long shot for other colleges.
The first race for that prize was in 1894 when Harvard and Columbia College won.
Musk’s campaign, backed by the tech billionaire and PayPal founder, is expected on Monday to announce the winner.
More: Elon Musk’s rival: Elon Trump, who is in the early stages of a presidential bid, has also declared a bid.
Elon Musk is the founder of electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors Inc. Elon is also chairman of SolarCity Corp., a solar panel installer.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has launched a campaign to help Elon Musk win the 2020 race.
But Musk and his supporters have also been accused of bias and corruption.
A campaign finance watchdog, the Campaign Legal Center, said last week it would investigate allegations that Musk’s political donations were improperly tied to political campaigns.
Some critics have suggested that Musk has taken a more moderate stance on climate change than his rivals, while others say his stance on immigration and trade could benefit his campaign.
Musk, who has built his company into a major player in solar power, is seeking to be the first man to launch a company into space and has said he is willing to build the world’s first commercial space station.
He has also said he would be open to accepting money from foreign governments.
Musk has said the race has turned into a “political circus.”
