Southern University defenseman Luke Bickell has earned the nickname “Southern Bird” after his play this season, leading the team to a 3-1 series lead over the University of Illinois Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks won the game 4-3 on Sunday in Chicago.
Bickell and the Hawks have had a busy start to the season.
After losing five of their first six games, the Hawks earned a 5-2 win over Northern Iowa on Thursday.
In a 4-2 victory against Northern Iowa, the team earned a 6-1 victory in a shootout.
The Hawks won four of their next five games and swept the next two.
Bickels second goal of the night came at 11:05 of the second period to give the Hawks a 3, 2 lead.
Bischels goal was the winner in the final seconds of regulation.
Southern University’s Connor Smith scored a goal in the first period.
He has five points (three goals, two assists) in four games.
The Hawks have two points (one goal, two points) in their past five games.
The Blackhawks will play the University at Cedar Rapids in a game at the University Center on Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
