AUBURN HILLS, Alabama — For a couple hours Tuesday, Duke University’s basketball team faced one of the most difficult test of its life.
With just under four minutes remaining in the first half, sophomore guard Tyler Lydon made a layup and the Blue Devils took a 91-84 lead.
Duke didn’t take the lead for good until Duke’s first basket of the game, but that wasn’t long enough for the Blue Devil to rally.
Lydon then put Duke up 91-85 with 1:12 left in the second half, putting the Blue Demon on top by five.
Duke was able to hold onto the lead, but couldn’t capitalize on the extra possessions that Lydons made.
The Blue Devils have now lost three games by a combined score of 55 points or less, the most in the country.
The most recent loss came at No. 3 Auburn in November, when the Tigers outscored Duke 52-16.
In the past two games, Duke has gone 4-1 against SEC opponents and 5-1 away from the Blue Demons.
