The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is launching a $8.5 billion project to transform its historic campus into a research hub.
The campus is located at the heart of downtown Chicago and houses the University of Chicago Medical Center and its affiliated hospitals.
The university plans to build an indoor research facility that will house about 1,200 research and academic researchers.
The $8-billion project will also build a research library, a meeting space, and offices and offices for about 1.5 million students and faculty members.
The project will include $1 billion in federal funding, according to a press release from the university.
